Modernizing the United Nations System

John Trent will be visiting Vancouver and Victoria next week to present talks on the theme of his recently published book Modernization of the United Nations System: Civil Society's Role in Moving from International Relations to Global Governance, Barbara Budrich Publishers, Opladen, Germany, 2007 (available in USA from www.isbs.com and in Canada from www.renoufbooks.com).

John Trent is a Fellow of the Centre on Governance at the University of Ottawa and was formerly a professor and chair of the University's Department of political science. He has written numerous publications with a focus on international relations and their reform. A long term Secretary General of the International Political Science Association from 1976 to 1988, Trent was also a member of the International Social Science Council from 1976 to 1991 and chair of its Constitutional Committee. He acted as founding vice-president of the Academic Council on the United Nations System, aimed at spanning the gap between academics and international public servants.

Since his retirement, he has organized two international roundtables on global governance and institutional reform in the post 9-11 period and participated in many more. He is an Executive Committee member of the World Federalists Movement Canada.

AT: St Aidan’s United Church,
This church is located at 3703 St. Aidan's Street, immediately to the east of the shopping mall in the North-East quadrant of the Shelbourne St. & Cedar Hill Cross Rd. intersection.
The street is the one-way, northwards continuation of Richmond, after it crosses Cedar Hill X Road.

Parking: is available freely in the church parking lot, at the top of the Aidan Street hill.

Program:
1) AGM to hear annual reports from the various committees and to elect officers for 2007-2008;
2) New business and discussions;

Special Address: DEEPENING DEMOCRACY by Building Global Justice from the Bottom Up
Special Guest Speaker: Prof. / Dr. Jim Harding

About the speaker: Dr. Jim Harding is a retired Professor of Justice Studies, life-long activist, author and speaker. A co-founder of the Students for a Democratic University (SDU), he was a central figure in the unrest and activism that made the new Simon Fraser University campus newsworthy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While receiving his diploma, Harding once surprised the crusty SFU chancellor Gordon Shrum by kissing his shoes. [See: http://www.abcbookworld.com/view_author.php?id=8657}

Dr. Harding is also a well versed critic of the Canadian nuclear industry His latest book, Canada's Deadly Secret: Saskatchewan Uranium and the Global Nuclear System unveiled the hitherto unexamined ways in which Canada has been a major supplier of depleted uranium, for military use in the Middle East.

In other projects, he has addressed Aboriginal rights, the environment, free trade, and the spread of cancer with analyses that provide alternate visions for configuring energy, health, and sovereignty towards a more sustainable and peaceful future.

Jim Harding presently lives in Saskatchewan. Some of his other books are: After Iraq: War, Imperialism and Democracy (Fernwood, 2004) and Social Justice and Social Policy (Wilfrid Laurier, 1995).
